Outsider Memoirs: Tracey Thorn & Dustin Lance Black
Hosted by Damian Barr
We all have our own stories – our own secrets. Too often we’re told to be quiet. To write your memoir is to share your story. To read a memoir is to become part of somebody else’s story, to see yourself reflected in their pages. In this special Salon we meet two brilliant outsiders – they’ve both fought hard to find their voice and make it heard. And what voices! What stories!
In Another Planet, Tracey Thorn returns to the scene of her 1970s childhood where ‘life was slow and very little happened, over and over again’ as her diary records. How did she get from there to Everything But The Girl? Dustin Lance Black – who wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for Milk and helped overturn California’s anti-gay marriage Proposition 8 – grew up in a conservative Mormon household in Texas. In his inspiring memoir Mama's Boy, Black takes us back to his childhood and introduces us to his plucky, determined mother.
Hosted by Damian Barr, award-winning writer and Literary Salon host, whose past guests include Armistead Maupin, Jojo Moyes, Caitlin Moran and John Waters.
