Covid safety at the Salon

Due to the rapidly changing Covid situation, we’re taking extra steps to keep everyone safe at our Salon on Dec 2nd at london Library. And we need your help. Please pay attention to the updated information below. Do get in touch if you have any questions or if your situation has changed and you’d like a refund.

Here are the measures we're taking to keep you as safe as possible and information about what you can do to help us protect everyone on the night.

  • Most important: Please take a lateral flow test on Wednesday or Thursday and present proof of a negative result on arrival.

  • Please wear a mask on arrival or have proof of exemption. We will have disposable masks, should you need one.

  • As much as we’d LOVE to see your smiles, please wear a mask during the event and when moving around the room.

  • All our staff will be masked and tested on the day.

  • We’ve reduced capacity to give everyone in the room as much personal space as possible, but we are not able to put 2 metres between each seat.

  • We will have a bar area and we will be serving alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. Please return to your seat with your drink and/or do your best to socially distance near the bar.

  • Windows will be open for ventilation but the Library has good heating so you’ll still be cosy! If you’d like to keep your coat with you, please do.

  • Please socially distance where possible and make use of the hand washing facilities and sanitizer stations.

Finally, please stay safe and comfortable at home if you have tested positive for coronavirus or have symptoms of illness, including a cough, sore throat, runny nose or fever. As ever, we reserve the right to refuse entry. We want everyone to feel safe and comfortable so they can enjoy the Salon and sharing stories. If, for any reason, you feel unable to attend in person we will gladly refund your ticket and hope you can join us online.

Thank you for all your help and support!

Save Our Libraries!

On Sunday a national campaign was launched to help save our libraries. I wrote a piece talking about how special my childhood library was and is to me and our community.

‘Newarthill Library saved my life. It was safe and warm when home was cold and chaotic. Nothing bad ever happened in the library, except in books – I’m still not over Aslan and don’t get me started on Of Mice and Men. As a boy, I lost myself in stories. And eventually that’s where I found myself too, because every writer starts out as a reader.’

What are your memories of your local Library? How do you use it now?

The Literary Tarot by Brink Literacy Project

I’ve always been intrigued by tarot—by the stories each card represents. So I was thrilled when I was asked by Brink Literacy Project to pair a card with a classic work of literature for their new Literary Tarot Deck. I chose the Six of Cups! You'll have to get the deck to find out which classic novel I paired it with. Other authors involved include Roxane Gay, Margaret Atwood and Dani Hedlund.

The Brink Literacy Project is a nonprofit organization. Through their education, community, and publishing divisions, their nonprofit works worldwide to foster a love of literature, increase literacy rates, and use storytelling to empower underserved communities. The Literary Tarot will help raise funds for their nonprofit programs this year.

Cauvery Madhavan has chosen You Will Be Safe Here as one of the literary finds that helped her conquer lockdown!

Interesting to see authors also (re)turning to classics and re-reads during lockdown. But very grateful to see You Will Be Safe Here on this list and alongside new favourite Seán Hewitt. Thanks Cauvery Madhavan.

On the money: a portrait of Sir Walter Scott at 250

It was a joy to write this piece about Sir Walter Scott in art for Art UK - a cultural education charity working to make art available to everyone. There are a number of works of art featuring Scott, his characters, settings, family members and pets in UK collections, which says a lot about how popular he once was. It's interesting to see how representations of Scott vary from dour to almost twinkly.

In Search of Sir Walter Scott

Walter Scott is 250 this year. Now is the moment to reconsider the man in the monument, to recontextualise him, his world and his extensive works. It’s time to go In Search of Sir Walter Scott.

Scott looms large over Edinburgh and Scottish literature. A polymath and pioneer he was celebrated, envied and parodied in his day. He made a fortune from writing, lost it all and made it back before dying.
